Kristalina Georgieva praised Javier Milei and supported Argentina's economic direction: "It's good to support them."

Just days after the final terms of the financial swap granted by the United States were announced, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) , Kristalina Georgieva , reaffirmed her support for the Argentine government's economic program and highlighted the results achieved in growth, inflation and fiscal accounts.
“ Given Argentina’s strong economic position, it’s a good idea to support the country on this path ,” Georgieva said during an interview with Bloomberg, in which she analyzed the progress of the adjustment plan promoted by Economy Minister Luis Caputo and supported by President Javier Milei .
The IMF chief stressed that the organization works "in close collaboration with the Argentine authorities and its international partners," referring to the United States Treasury , the World Bank , and the Inter-American Development Bank .
"We're doing this because we've seen a positive change in Argentina over the past two years: it's gone from negative growth to 4.5% annually, inflation has dropped from triple digits to 28%, the deficit has disappeared, and there's a surplus. Furthermore, poverty is trending downward. That means something good is happening in Argentina," he explained.
The official emphasized that Washington's financial support aims to consolidate the stability achieved and support the process of macroeconomic normalization. "Supporting Argentina is positive because it is doing the right thing," she emphasized.
Asked about the future of the relationship with Argentina in the event of a political change, Georgieva was categorical: “ Milei will be there. He will be president for a while. And I think there is still strong support in Argentina for the country to become a normal economy, with regulations that serve a purpose.”
Although she avoided commenting on the October 26 elections, the IMF director insisted that " the decision is up to the Argentine people " and that the organization "does not get involved in politics," but she praised the country's institutional and fiscal progress.
The personal and ideological harmony between Milei and Donald Trump also reinforces the confidence of international markets. The Argentine president himself recently stated that " Trump supports me ," highlighting the White House's support for the adjustment program.
Official sources confirmed that the technical negotiations between the Ministry of Economy and the United States Treasury , headed by Scott Bessent , are practically complete.
A formal meeting between Caputo and Bessent is not planned during the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington . However, informal contacts are expected before the meeting closes.
The U.S. Treasury will need to define the terms of the $20 billion swap and the mechanisms for using an additional $20 billion to repurchase New York-law bonds with upcoming maturities.
The goal is to reduce pressure on the Central Bank 's reserves, which face commitments of USD 8.5 billion between January and July 2026.
According to sources at the Ministry of Finance, the technical teams from the IMF and the Ministry of Economy maintain ongoing dialogue . A formal meeting between Georgieva and Caputo is not expected, given that negotiations are underway.
The priority now lies with the US Treasury's timeline, which must detail the implementation of the bailout. For the IMF, the new financial framework represents an opportunity to consolidate the achievements of the adjustment program and sustain the stability achieved.
“ We see real progress in Argentina. The country is on a path of fiscal consolidation and economic normalization, and deserves the support of the international community,” Georgieva concluded.
